Welcome to the campaign to create a Colorado Housing Investment Fund

Housing Funds are proven tools for financing the creation and preservation of affordable housing. 38 other states and numerous cities and regions have created housing funds and it is time for Colorado to create this reliable tool and serve the eldery, homeless, children in poverty and working families struggling to get and keep a roof over their heads.

1. Petition Drive Comes to a Halt - Press Release
I am writing today with sad news to report.  As of Wednesday, July 2, 2008, the Housing Works for Colorado petition drive will be ceasing operations for the 2008 election season.  The campaign team made the difficult decision to halt the petition drive after careful review of our timeline and available resources. We had hoped to overcome some of the delays and setbacks we faced in simply getting a ballot title approved and petition drive started.  However, we are forced to conclude the days are too few and we don’t have enough resources to overcome the short timeframe for delivering enough valid signatures by August 4.  Instead we will work to garner resources and prepare for a future campaign.
Despite the setback of not making it onto the November 2008 ballot, we have many successes to be proud of.  As a citizen’s initiative with limited resources, we gathered over 30,000 signatures of the 76,000 needed to make the ballot, developed a network of over 1,000 statewide volunteers, and raised contributions.  These are not easy tasks and we have the hard work of our dedicated friends to thank.  These are also successes that can be directly translated into future campaign efforts.  With planning, fundraising and commitment, a future campaign will be poised for success.
As Campaign Manager, it has been a privilege to see the progress and dedication put into the creation of a Housing Investment Fund for Colorado.  While operations have ceased for 2008, a terrific network of people dedicated to a Housing Investment Fund has been put into place, making future attempts that much easier.  Colorado will see a dedicated source for affordable housing in the very near future, and people like you are to thank.

It has been a pleasure working for you all,

2. Housekeeping
Yes!  We still want your completed petitions returned to Housing Works for Colorado.  While the petitions will probably not be filed, the thousands of signatures on them are valuable to our future efforts.  You do not need to notarize these before sending them in. You can mail those back to our post office box at your convenience.  Send petitions to Housing Works for Colorado, PO Box 1920, Denver, CO 80201-1920.
After the campaign winds up operations, you can continue to reach the Colorado Housing Investment Fund Coalition and its partner organizations for ongoing information about the next steps toward creating a Housing Investment Fund for Colorado.  Contact CHIFC at PO Box 9610, Denver, CO 80209 or www.colohousingfund.org

3. Thank You
While we all share the immense disappointment of not placing this issue on the ballot in November 2008, we also must acknowledge the hard work and selfless contributions of everyone involved with the campaign effort.  Thank You!

Note from the Campaign Manager

Hello friends!  My name is Chris Lee and I am excited to announce that I will be the Campaign Manager for Housing Works for Colorado’s 2008 Petition campaign.  Affordable housing is one of Colorado’s most important issues and the 2008 election is the time to invest in Colorado’s future.
This is a campaign that we can win.  We’ve polled Colorado’s voters and know that there is a pressing need for this.  We’re behind 38 other states with housing investment funds and we simply can’t fall behind any longer.  Not only does our polling tell us we can win, it tells us that we have a solid statewide base of support to help us get this important issue on the ballot and win in November.
As we begin this campaign I encourage you to get involved however you can.  It’s true, we do need to raise money, but we also need to raise awareness.  Committing to gather signatures for us will help ensure we uphold our promise to make the Colorado Housing Investment Fund a reality.
Thanks for taking the time to learn more about Housing Works for Colorado.  Please help us fight for this issue and get Housing Works for Colorado on the ballot in November.
I welcome your questions, input and suggestions and can be contacted at chris@housingworksforcolorado.org or 303-997-2447.
Best,
Chris Lee
